The power of mindset

Mindsets have a significant effect on our motivation, life outcomes and our health. It can affect everything in our lives, how we view food, exercise and stress.

The following are tips to help and support you – taken from my deeper dive into the subject which you can watch (video) or download (pdf) in the Resources section of the site.

  • Have a goal – a plan in life forms purpose and meaning and can be a valuable tool to maintaining positive emotions.
  • Acknowledge – awareness is a powerful asset and gives us perspective. Be present in the moment. How is your current mindset making you feel? Awareness can support us in reprogramming our subconscious and changing our state to a CAN DO attitude.
  • Welcome emotions – they are telling you something – to care, connect and engage.
  • Utilise – use emotions to your advantage – for example, stress can be an asset providing you with energy and potential. Reframing it positively can be the wind in your sails, creating focus, strength, and growth.
  • Visualise – the positive results and successes you would like. The brain can’t always differentiate between an emotion associated to an event or one visualised.
  • Box breathe ‘4,4,4’ – breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, breath out slowly for four seconds, then repeat. This technique was taught to the military as a way of staying calm whilst remaining alert.
  • Be grateful – Acknowledging those aspect of life that you are truly grateful for can be a good way of anchoring your thoughts to a more positive mindset.
  • Surround yourself with those who inspire, both physically and virtually through media. Podcasts are a great way to connect to inspiring individuals who look at life with a telescope of growth, development and gratitude. After all, inspiration is a contact sport!
